When a survivor becomes a steward…the burden is real.
"Sir, this is Officer Richards of the county sheriff's department."
"Why are you calling me from Jill's number?"
It was the worst day of my life, and the day that changed everything. My fiancée was gone, and I was grief-struck — but also the steward who needed to act.
First, finding her healthcare directives and getting them to the hospital. Then her emergency contacts — locked inside her phone. In the days that followed, friends and family. Then acquaintances, co-workers, distant relatives. The funeral. Then the will and trust, where I was also named her executor. Bank accounts. The auto lease. Her online accounts. What to do about Facebook.
All in a few painful months.
As I've shared this story over the years, I've heard it back from so many friends and family — they've been the steward too, for someone they loved, and learned how complicated it can be.
And even the ones who haven't been a steward themself often say that they catch themselves wondering how their own people would manage:
"Who would know where I keep my healthcare directive?"
"Who would they need to call?"
"How would they get into my phone?"
"Does anyone besides me know about the cat's medication?"
"Should someone know how to reach my attorney?"
It's daunting to face a thousand questions like these. But they don't all need answers today — and even a basic plan gives you, the planner, real peace of mind. And what it gives the people you love is your love.

Most planners build their first outline in a single sitting.
Some come back over weeks. Both are right.
